2009 Red River Bassmaster Classic Winning Lures & Gear

So here is a brief summary of the baits and gear used by Skeet Reese to win 2009 Bassmasters Classic!
Skeet used two main baits, the new Crazy Legs Chigger craw and the Lucky Craft Redemption Spinnerbait. These baits seem very fitting, since a chigger craw was Skeet's demise when Boyd Duckett used it to knock him to second on Lay Lake and Skeet designed the Redemption Spinnerbait for Lucky Craft and that is exactly what he got, REDEMPTION!!!

Winning Gear Notes
> Spinnberbait gear: 7' extra-fast Lamiglas XR 704 rod, Abu Garcia Revo Winch (5.4:1), 50-pound Spiderwire Ultracast braided line, 3/8-ounce Lucky Craft Redemption Spinnerbait (MS American shad head, nickel combination blades, customized translucent skirt).

> He said he fished spinnerbait on the Revo Winch because it's a strong, slower-geared reel. And he fished it on the braid because it cut through the pad stems better than mono or fluorocarbon.

> Flipping gear: Lamiglas XFT 806 flipping stick, Abu Garcia Skeet Series Revo casting reel, 25-pound Berkley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon, 3/16- and 1/4- ounce unnamed sinkers (1/4-ounce in wind), 3/0 unnamed hook, Berkley PowerBait Crazy Leg Chigger craw (black/blue-fleck)

Oregon Rivers Fly Fishing and Adventures

Losing my Touch?

The cold, cold weather that's dogged us this winter has finally gone away, and I would love to be able to tell you that the fishing has really picked up - but it hasn't. I've been out quite a few times this past week or two but haven't got a great deal to report. Where shall I start?

Bottom-Bouncing at Blith
First it was a two-day trip to Blithfield with Joe. Conditions were very poor with very low temperatures, little wind and a lake full of snowmelt and considering all that, it actually fished passably well. One or two real biggies came out, though not to us but we did manage a few doubles between us. Joe had fish to 13 pounds odd, that fish falling to a burt, his favourite lure on Blith, and I managed a few fish to 17lbs 11oz, our biggest of the session. The seventeen pounder was taken on a deep trolled "Big Curly" lure. They are good lures for trolling deep and slow since they are heavy, so they stay down and the tail is made of thin plastic so it continues to ripple even when the lure is hardly moving.

Colder Still up North
Next came a two-day trip to the lakes where I found the fishing to be very hard. There was still a lot of snow on the fells and of course as it melted it was finding its way into the lake. As a result the surface temperature had dropped to 3.9 degrees from the 5.3 degrees it was a fortnight earlier. This meant that for once, the lower levels of the lake would be warmer than the surface and not srprisingly, this had put the fish down very deep.

One the first day I fished all morning without a run so I decided to try something new and visit an area of the lake I hardly ever fish. That improved things a little and I picked up a few small pike to around nine pounds or so, two on deadbaits and one on a lure. The next day I went back to the same area and sat it out for the day. Most of the fish came late in the day but I did get six runs in all, one dropped, one missed and four fish landed. Three of the fish were over ten pounds with the biggest going 15lbs 12oz.

I though about staying for a third day but as I was starting to talk to myself quite a bit I thought it best for my sanity if I went home.

Not Having a Chew
Next came Chew Valley Reservoir and once again it was to be a two-day affair. Surprisingly this turned out to be the worst trip of the lot. Joe and I both blanked on the first day, in the company of many others and day two was little better. Joe got our only double - around eleven pounds and I had to make do with a solitary jack. I did hook something very much bigger on a float-trolled mackerel but it shed the hooks after a few seconds so I never got to find out how big it was.

Simply Catches Bass

The next lure I am going to Blog about is a very simple & ordinary looking lure, but here is the deal, it flat catches bass. I have been using this to catch bass for years. It is the Lake Fork Ring Fry.

Like I said, it does not look like much, but then again neither do Senkos or Trick worms and we know they catch the heck out of bass as well. Here is how I use it to catch bass:

In water less then 4ft, I fish it weightless like many people fish senkos around docks, wood and scattered grass. The way I catch most of my fish, is to fish it on a Carolina or Mojo rig. The Carolina Rig is the choice for deeper water and scattered cover. I use the mojo rig in water 5-20ft where around just about any cover from thick weeds to gravel & rocks, its flat deadly!
Give the Ring Fry a chance, you will not be disappointed. Off all the anglers I have introduced this bait to, I don't any have ever complained.

Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project Community Open House

BC is under fire with many many hydro-electric projects and here is a chance for you to hear about one of the largest attacking the wild rivers of Bute Inlet.  Some of the rivers under fire are:  Homathko River, Southgate River, and Orford River.

Southgate River

The Environmental Assessment Office held 3 open houses in the small communities closest to Bute Inlet earlier this year:  Campbell River, Powell River, and Sechelt.  Like most people in the Lower Mainland, I did not have the chance to go to these remote communities to attend the open houses.

To combat this issue the B.C. Creek Protection Society and the Watershed Watch Salmon Society  are holding their own un-official open house titled: “Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project Open House”, at the UBC Robson Square Campus (Room C150) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on February 10, 2009.

The Upper Pitt River hydroelectric project was held up because thousands of people attended the open houses.  The BC government had to listen.   Please take the time to get informed about the attack on the pristine wilderness that is Bute Inlet and its many wild rivers.  A multitude of wildlife including the grizzly bears,  the mountain goats, marbled murrelet, and fish including the bull trout, cutthroat trout, coho, pink, chinook, chum salmon and steelhead that inhabit these waters need your help.

Some Photos of the Southgate River and surrounding peaks:

You can submit your opinions on the project there as well if you can not make the open house.  Hope to see you there!

Tight lines,
