Windmills, Trout, and a Catfish

Met up with George Moss of Outdoor Water Solutions to install a few windmills today and tomorrow. We use these windmill aerators for a variety of aeration needs, especially when there is no electricity available. Some are used for summertime aeration to keep ponds from stagnating, some are used to keep open water in the winter to let sunlight in and keep the pond oxygenated, and some we use to keep open water in the winter to attract ducks and geese for hunting and wildlife viewing!

We finished up installing windmills a bit earlier than expected, so we headed out to do a bit of trout fishing before sunset. At our last windmill install we were talking about trout fishing with our client Josh Catour and we all decided to just head out to the lake. En Route, Chef Todd called and happened to have the afternoon off of work and I think his sixth sense just knew I would be heading out to the lake on this fine November afternoon.

At the lake, the trout were definitely digging this nice cool sunny weather! They were up shallow and chasing pretty much any bait tossed in front of them. We caught trout on mepps spinners, curly tail grubs, jigs, minnows, chicken livers, and canned corn!

We also caught this nice cold water catfish as well.

Huge Fat Bass and Bluegill

Today was probably the last electrofishing survey of the year! A cold front is moving in, along with yet another 1"+ rain, and that will just about put an end to electrofishing. We still have 4 aeration systems and 5 windmills to install, about 10,000 walleye a few hundred muskies and northerns, and that will pretty much wrap up our entire season until the lakes freeze up enough to start drilling holes!!!!

We shocked Oberhelmans lake and Pat's pond yesterday. Check out these pictures!

Then today we squeezed Jared Obrien's new pond in at the last minute. His new pond is completely full of 9-10 inch bluegill that are absolutely beautiful! Not too shabby for picking up a property with an exising pond! I expect great things from that pond over the next couple years!!

Big Illinois Buck From Otter Creek!

Otter Creek is an HB Featured Property over near Astoria, Illinois. It is quickly becoming the very best fishing property in the midwest with over 200 acres of trophy fishing lakes and hatchery ponds devoted to Largemouth Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Tiger Muskie, Pure Muskie, Crappie, Albino Catfish, and Hybrid Bluegill. Anyhow it is very hard for me not to talk about the fish when talking about this property, but it is also a very nice hunting property as well!

The wetlands, food plots, and aeration systems hold about 4500 geese and ducks throughout the winter, but still the subject of todays little article is the deer. Here is a picture of a deer harvested by Ryan Pudik last week. The body is so big it makes the antlers look small:

Working on this property is like going on VACATION! Just going around and filling up the feeders on all the lakes takes about 5 hours, especially when you stand with your jaw wide open as you push the test button and watch the fish feed at each station. There I go again, thoughts always drift to the fish when thinking about this property. All of the lakes have been built and stocked within the last few years and I just shiver inside thinking about the fishing potential this place boasts not only presently, but in the future. These fish are still young and have alot of growing up to do!!!

Week Review and Upcoming Schedule

Quarter till midnight and I am sitting here trying to make a game plan for the next 6 weeks. I just spent the week electrofishing and delivering Hybrid Striped Bass across the state of Illinois, all while trying to juggle about a million or two other things as well. I managed to squeeze in a Hooked on Fishing Park meeting, a house showing, an onsite consultation, 400 answered voice and emails, and two chiropractor appointments (I hurt my back playing football in June, lived with the pain for 4 months and finally went to the Dr. Bob Benningfield and am completely pain free after 2 weeks!!!!!) Also got the kids to bed every night before getting back to working on something and even managed a trip to the park with them on thursday night for a couple hours.

Looking ahead, I will be delivering Hybrid Striped Bass saturday morning, hopefully will be just sick enough to not be able to make it to Brook's friends wedding sat evening, but yet still able to watch a few football games! Then Sunday we are heading to church and then to Ariya's B-day party (its at the lake, so that will be a good time). And then Monday and Tuesday are going to be SWAMPED trying to get everything done before I leave for the National Pond Boss Convention in Branson, MO on Wed. Monday we are going to squeeze in a fishing trip with the skyline drive nursing home down at the fishing park, tuesday will be spent just getting everything ready for the convention. Thursday I am fishing in a "celebrity" fishing tournament so to speak on Table Rock Lake and then friday afternoon Justin and I are in charge of the seining demonstration at the Big Cedar Lodge Pond and also are setting up displays and talking about the Green Monster Fishing Lights, Bojo Buglights, and the Porcupine Fish Attractors!

When we get home from the conference I left monday open on the schedule, but then the rest of september is booked solid with lake audits, electrofishing surveys, and consultations in the Quad Cities, Wildwood, Champaign, Wilmington, Fiatt, Camelot, Middle Grove, and a big aeration install in Shelbina, Mo! All of our summer help is back to school and Justin and I are going to be working like madmen trying to get everything done, not to mention packaging up and shipping out online orders everyday. Oh yeah, one minor detail I forgot as well is that it looks like I hopefully will be signing some papers next week to sell my house and will probably be moving out in a month and still need to find a place to live! I have already seen everything that is available online in the peoria area, but just need to get out and start checking some places out. Life is definitely in the fast lane, but as long as I can stay somewhat sane over the next 6 weeks things will be shaping up pretty good for the winter!

Now I just need to stay up a bit longer, figure out a way to clog up my nose completely, get a little sore throat started, wake up super early in the morning without much sleep and then I just may be in a great position to get out of this wedding sat afternoon! Its a good thing Brook doesnt read my blog very often....hehe. If for some reason someone is still reading this far down the page without any pictures or videos to break up the monotony I will report back later this weekend with results from the operation wedding ditching project! There is not any single event that I dread more than a wedding and a reception.
