Monster Illinois Deer Bow Kill!

My good friend Todd Staley has been renovating an old farm in Fulton County for quite awhile now! He has been working on a nice smallmouth bass pond, some wetlands, food plots, and just been transforming the farm into ideal habitat for ducks, geese, pheasants and deer.

His efforts have just recently paid off! When he was out bow hunting last thursday evening, Todd was able to harvest this monster 12 pointer! The deer gave him a perfect 20 yard shot from his stand and Todd was fortunate to not have seen this deer coming from the standing corn or Buck Fever would have for sure kicked in! Let me just say it is much harder to shoot straight when your heart is literally pounding out of your chest. Its much easier to harvest a buck when you dont have time to think, but just to react.

Here are some more pictures of this buck of a lifetime:

Peak of the Rut…..Chicago Shopping!

Well, its the peak of the whitetail deer rut, geese and ducks are flying, pheasants and quail are in season, and the fish are actually still biting pretty aggressively...........and this weekend I was in Chicago shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont get me wrong, I had a great time away from the kids and work (Brook will read this blog post eventually) but no matter how much we needed a weekend away from the kids (for the first time in 2 years) Its just hard to be in Chicago, and shopping to boot.

Grandma and Grandpa took the kids to Fun City in Iowa on Thursday afternoon so Brook and I booked a last minute hotel on priceline.com and stayed at the 4 star Hyatt Lodge for $60 that night. I had to work South of Chicago on Friday anyways, so we just made a weekend out of it.

Friday morning well before rush hour traffic I headed over to Art Van Barens new pond near Beecher, IL. We hooked up a vertex air one plus aeration system and then formulated a gameplan to turn this 1/2 acre pond into the very best backyard fishin' hole imaginable. A few weeks earlier we stocked 100 lbs of feed trained largemouth bass, and thousands of fathead minnows and golden shiners. With a feeding program in place for next season and a properly designed pond with aeration system, I expect great things from this pond by the end of 2010! By the time the pond is exactly 1 year old, he is going to have a 2.5 lb average on these genetically superior LMB!!!!

I didnt really want to rush back to the mall, so we spent a couple hours checking out a couple other ponds, Art's factory (which is AMAZING!), and even did a little fishing. Then after lunch I really needed to head back up north to the windy city. I just could not imagine living anywhere near there- there are just people and traffic everywhere.

So the next 24 hours really werent that bad, but boy was I glad to be on the road headed back towards God's country with a deep dish giordonno's chicago pizza and a 6-pack of cinnabons Saturday evening. The only good thing about Chicago is the food!!!

Interesting and Large Bass Experiment

If I had a top ten list of favorite things, I would have a tuff choice in the middle of the pack choosing between Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and a new Fish stocking experiment! I just can't ever seem to get my fill of either.

Anyhow, enough of the nonsense as I try to make it through the rest of this yet another rainy day. This interesting pond that we electrofished for Pat Mcsherry last week was not necassarily meant to be a fish stocking experiment by design, but falls into that category by default. I have been researching and fooling around with different stocking combinations of low density predators with high density forage and Pat's pond just fit the bill perfectly.

Based on a foggy memory and some observations we estimated that the pond had a huge fish kill about 4 winters ago. The pond is very fertile and simply produced more fish biomass that summer than it could support through a harsh winter and the biggest fish simply suffocated to death. As the fish started dying, their decaying bodies only used up more and more of the available oxygen under the ice and pretty much all the fish died. Well to make a long story even a bit longer, all of the smallest fish in the pond found enough oxygen to survive the rest of the winter.

There were 1000's of small fish that survived the winter kill and absolutely no large predators to eat them. So many that the fish became instantly stunted, as they all competed for the same tiny peices of available food. That basically set the stage for a very low density predator/high density forage situation. When we electrofished this pond, it was completely full of tens of thousands of small crappie, tiny bluegill and little bullheads. The problem was they were all adult fish with huge eyes like this one.
>

While there definitely was not a natural balanced fishery at hand, what we did find was just about what I told Pat to expect, I kept telling him that we were going to come across a handful of nice big bass as we were dialing up scores of adult midget fish. Small bass would survive the fish kill as well, and a few of them would make it big enough fast enough to avoid the huge stuntedization of the rest of the population. Then they simply would have as much to eat as they could ever desire! When we did start to find some bass, I didnt expect them to be quite like this: morbidly obese! Look at the size of their mouths in relationship to their bodies.

The average bass in this pond is 18.8 inches long with a relative weight average for the lake of 125%! The biggest bass we sampled was 20.5" and weighed 108 oz. with a 138% relative weight. A typical 20.5" LMB should weigh 78 oz.

You can actually learn quite a bit about LMB by observing this sort of scenario. I have electrofished and analyzed well more than 100 lakes and ponds across the midwest this year and can tell you this- If you want to truly grow big bass, you can do that much easier and faster by stocking just a few per acre and harvest them like crazy if they even think about making babies!

This may sound strange to many, but the average ADULT bass in Illinois is 12 inches long. If you wait until next year it will still be 12 inches long and if you let it grow up the year after that, its still going to be 12 inches! Many lakes and ponds will grow their original stocked fish well past 12 inches due to limited competition, and the first year class after that may hit 14-15 inches, but the large majority of their offspring will not grow much past 12 inches due to the increased and compounding competition, unless they are harvested, preyed upon, or naturally thinned down.

Tragic Accident, We are gonna miss Gabriel!

Early Sunday morning I got a call from my mother that there had been a bad accident in Haiti. My Aunt and Uncle and their 5 youngest children are missionaries over there. My Uncle Tim, 16 year old cousin Sara, and 5 year old Gabriel were in a horrible accident on their way to church. Tim has some head injuries, broken arm, and multiple open wounds, Sara's knee was torn open and her neck cut pretty bad, and Gabriel was thrown from the vehicle and died at the accident with head and lung injuries. The other driver just never saw them and he unfortunately fled the scene, even leaving his passenger behind.

Tim and Sara have along recovery ahead of them, but their bodies will be fine. The loss of Gabriel however, words cant even describe. 11 years ago Tim and Joan lost their first son Joshua to a tragic drowning accident while they were missionaries in Tennessee. I just try not to think about how unbelievably hard this would be to handle. Tim and Joan are very strong though. This definitely isnt easy, but they have plans of finishing their work in Haiti and just fully trust that God has a plan for even a tragedy such as this. It has been a long week for all of us, but we have tons of friends and family that have come together and are praying for and supporting Joan, Tim and their 5 daughters.

As I was looking at Gabriels little body today in the casket, Joan came up and as we hugged all she could say was "he was my little fishin buddy" And he was. At that moment I couldnt think of anything to say, the embrace and look of afirmation was all I could do, and really all that was needed. I dont know what this winter will bring or when they will be able to go back to Haiti, but I will definitely be headed there to help them out at some point.

Tragedies and death just dont seem to happen all that often in my little portion of the world, really the only funerals I have even been to is my grandfather a few years ago and Joshua's 11 years ago.

Shocking Lakes and Ponds is oh so much fun!

We have been shocking and evaluating lakes and ponds across Illinois like madmen! Some real good fishing, and some not so much!! But they all have potential and that is where we enter the picture. Some lakes need just a bit of tweaking and some need well, a bit more. Turning a body of water into a productive fishery really is not hard and doesnt take long and doesnt even cost that much money, as long as you are in tune to what the lake is set up to produce. They are all different!

Gary Glovers 4 acre pond near lewiston just needs a bit of agricultural lime to sweeten up the water to help grow some aquatic vegetation. David Van Ackers pond in the Quad Cities had a fish kill last winter and he lost all of his BIG fish, the small bass that did survive however are growing at a RAPID pace with little competition. Hidden Lakes big lake is perhaps the worst fishing lake on the entire property, we filled the boat with small fish. Hidden Lakes new lake is perhaps the best trophy bass fishing lake in central Illinois, but it wont be for long if they dont harvest TONS of the 11-13" bass that are taking over.

Next week we do some traveling to Champaign, Kickapoo, and Northern Illinois along with some fish deliveries mixed in. Its gonna be hectic.

Big Illinois Buck From Otter Creek!

Otter Creek is an HB Featured Property over near Astoria, Illinois. It is quickly becoming the very best fishing property in the midwest with over 200 acres of trophy fishing lakes and hatchery ponds devoted to Largemouth Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Tiger Muskie, Pure Muskie, Crappie, Albino Catfish, and Hybrid Bluegill. Anyhow it is very hard for me not to talk about the fish when talking about this property, but it is also a very nice hunting property as well!

The wetlands, food plots, and aeration systems hold about 4500 geese and ducks throughout the winter, but still the subject of todays little article is the deer. Here is a picture of a deer harvested by Ryan Pudik last week. The body is so big it makes the antlers look small:

Working on this property is like going on VACATION! Just going around and filling up the feeders on all the lakes takes about 5 hours, especially when you stand with your jaw wide open as you push the test button and watch the fish feed at each station. There I go again, thoughts always drift to the fish when thinking about this property. All of the lakes have been built and stocked within the last few years and I just shiver inside thinking about the fishing potential this place boasts not only presently, but in the future. These fish are still young and have alot of growing up to do!!!

Electrofishing at Four Lakes in Lisle, IL

On Wednesday we headed up to Four Lakes in Lisle, IL. The 4 lakes complex is an absolutely amazing, world class recreational property up near Chicago. There are 2200 condo and apartment units spread throughout the property and many of them are overlooking the very scenic 22 acre lake or the other lakes and river that runs through it. In the heart of the complex is a 4 run ski hill with terrain park, a dozen professional sand volleyball courts, basketball, tennis, pools, paddleboats, sailboats, walking trails, and pretty much anything you can imagine is included for the members to enjoy. Lets just say its not the average apartment complex swimming pool and community rec room .

On top of all that, the lakes are set up as unbelievable world class fishing, and they dont even realize what they have!!! We captured many 3-5 lb walleye, tons of 2-4 lb largemouth bass, some really nice crappies and even missed netting a couple nice northern pike. If for some reason I had to live near Chicago, it would be at this place. Here is a video of pics of fish we captured at  four lakes!

We invited Bill Anderson with CatchPhotoRelease along for the full lake audits with electrofishing survey and he took some awesome pics and wrote up a really nice little article about his adventure on the water- Electro Fishing with HB

Missouri Monday- An Awesome Day to FORGET!!!

5 am monday morning and we are completely loaded and ready to hit the road for Shelbina, Missouri. We were headed to Dan Bollow's newly acquired farm to install a Vertex Air 4 aeration system. Apparently the previous owner of the beautiful 3 acre pond failed to mention that the pond gets completely covered with watermeal every summer. Anyhow Dan did his research and basically put together a complete management plan for ridding his little slice of heaven of the dreaded floating green sand! He found us online and we were up for the task for helping him implement his plan for eliminating the watermeal.

Anyhow we were on the road heading towards Shelbina for oh about 5 minutes when our fish holding tank got picked up by the 35 mph wind gusts and thrown from our boat out onto the interstate. What a great way to get the morning started.

We were lucky the tank didnt hit any cars traveling along I74, but unfortunately the tank wasnt so lucky when a Semi plowed into the tank sending it flying into the middle grass buffer! The semi just kept on trucking.

So we very narrowly averted a potential disaster when we realized that our electrofishing annode arrays were supposedly in the tank! We spent a few minutes searching up and down the interstate with the aid of a state trooper and his spotlight who was so kindly called by an anonymous traveler who happened to see a big fish tank on the interstate at 5 am (apparently just seconds before the semi came by) and low and behold did find most all of the pieces of our $2000 annodes!

The good news is we found most of the pieces, the bad news was we found them a bit late after many cars and semis had ran over them a few times. We just bought those new annode arrays and only got to use them 3 TIMES!!!!!!

An hour later and we were back on the interstate headed for shelbina. We picked up a good friend from Taylor Missouri and headed over to Dan's and got the aeration system installed by noon. Then we headed over to Taylor to check out some of Jacob and Kent Heimers pond projects:

So about 6 pm and we are on the road headed back to Peoria when a very nice small town cop decides we are traveling just a bit too fast through his town on rt. 24. Let me just say that I was driving like a grandma on a Sunday afternoon and was already past town when I decided to speed up to 43 MPH just a few yards ahead of the 45 mph sign. Just a great way to cap off the day eh? He didnt mention anything about the missing left tailight on the trailer, broken license plate, or no seat belts. I think it was just the end of the month and he needed to fill out his ticket quota?

We got home about 9 pm and then up the next day at 5 am and headed for a consultation in Fiatt, IL. Then from Fiatt off straight to the Doctors office to find out whether we were having a boy or a girl. I did not want to find out, Brook did. Anyhow we are at the sonogram, baby looking fine, and Brook decides it is ok for us not to find out the gender.....So the next sonogram isnt for about 12 weeks.

State Record Longear Sunfish!

Electrofishing a huge lake near Champaign, Illinois last week we came across a huge population of longear sunfish. The largest we captured was 6 inches long and that my friends is an Illinois State Record for Longears!

Longear sunfish are absolutely beautiful:

Electro Fishing Lake Audits and Pics

Here are some pics from shocking some lakes and ponds the last few days. We will be doing a lot of traveling over the next few weeks performing Full Lake Audits and Electrofishing for BIG lakes and pond across the state of Illinois.

We are pretty much booked solid for the rest of this season, but get your favorite fishing lake, club, campground, etc signed up for next spring!!

Redear Sunfish Stocking program to combat zebra mussel infestation has been working!

Doug Oberhelmans Fish Pictures. This is a lake we have been stocking heavy with northern pike, tiger musky, and walleye in order to combat the infestation of carp, gizzard shad, and yellow bass. It is working, and the LMB are getting fatter and larger (albeit not quite as many of 'em):

Leisure Times Pictures:

That is definitely the end to a very eventful week! I am stuck in the office all day today trying to catch up on voice and emails and write up some reports before our next round of electrofishing kicks off at 5am Monday morning. Next week we are headed to Shelbina, Mo; Fiatt, IL; Lisle, IL; and the Quad Cities for electrofishing surveys and also gonna squeeze in a Sonogram for our little bun in the oven as well as attend the Lyle Finch Memorial Clay Pigeon Shoot that benefits the Easter Seals. Then on Saturday we are taking a family guided fishing out at the lake that they purchased from the PCS benefit auction. About next sunday I will have another round of really cool fish pics for sure!
